A Hero You’ll Want Santa To Bring You: An Ex for Christmas by Lauren Layne

When Lauren Layne charms, she sure does charm. An Ex for Christmas is just the perfect romantic book to spend a cold winter night with, especially if you’re in need of a “lift-me-up”. It’s delightful, and just oozes joy from every page. No doubt, lovers of all things holidays and romance will devour this magical read. On her way back home from work one evening before the holidays, Kelly meets a psychic who tells her that she’s already met the love of her life. Being the romantic and superstitious girl that she is, Kelly is convinced that one of her exes is her true love, so she goes on a mission trying to reconnect with all of them by Christmas. Watching her on the sidelines? Her best friend, Mark, who has always been there for her! I adored the setup for this book. It was so warm and lovely, and Lauren Layne does a beautiful job with it. It could easily have gotten tangled as Kelly goes through her list, all the while ignoring the man right in front of her, but LL writes her character in a way that makes her relatable. Her goals are well-intended being the romantic at hear, and she’s not out to hurt anyone. She’s obviously very stubborn, but I had to admire her determination. […]

I Was In A Bubble of Happiness: The Corner of Forever and Always by Lia Riley

I Was In A Bubble of Happiness: The Corner of Forever and Always by Lia Riley

Lia Riley’s small-town romances are so heart-warming. I loved loved loved the glimpse we got of Tuesday and Beau in the previous book, and waiting for The Corner of Forever and Always was torture, even though it was only a few months wait! I started this book one evening with a giant smile on my face, and excitement buzzing in my veins, and I finished the book with those same feelings, only heightened. I truly think this is one of Lia Riley’s most memorable book to date, and it’s safe to say, it’s all because of the characters. Heroines like Tuesday can be very frustrating for readers. She is flighty, a little bit all over the place, and happy-go-lucky ALL THE TIME. But the author writes her here with so much personality here, that it’s easy to fall for her character and root for her happiness. Tuesday is all sunshine and rainbows, and she brings a lightness to the story that kept me in the clouds at all times. I adored her personality, especially with how kind and selfless she could be. When she puts her heart into something, she goes all out for it. She is a truly endearing girl. Of course, she’s not all perfect and happy all the time. She does struggle with something that she did […]

I Was In Food And Romance Heaven: North To You by Tif Marcelo

I Was In Food And Romance Heaven: North To You by Tif Marcelo

Well, this book was charming, and sweet and so very endearing! I owe Ari big time for introducing me to North To You, a foodie romance debut that swept me off my feet. It’s not always that I encounter a debut novel that immediately makes me fall in love with the author’s writing, and turn me into a life-long fan, but Tif Marcelo’s North To You did exactly that for me. This is a book that has a lot of heart to it, and it’s all thanks to the lovable characters. These are characters that are built up so solidly throughout the book that you grow to know every aspect of their personalities intimately. And what great personalities they had! I immediately clicked with the heroine, Camille, a passionate food truck owner,  because of how resilient she was. She has had many obstacles thrown her way, but she continued to rise up from every difficult situation she has faced. Camille was hardworking, and very devoted to her sister’s success and happiness; the sacrifices she made for her sister warmed my heart! I just wanted for her to find the happiness she deserved. And she find that with Drew, quite possibly one of the best love interests I have ever read. Drew, a military man, was back home in San Francisco […]

Sparks Fly Between A Librarian & A Hockey Player: Mister Hockey by Lia Riley

Sparks Fly Between A Librarian & A Hockey Player: Mister Hockey by Lia Riley

I don’t even need to know what a book is about if it has Lia Riley’s name on the cover – I will pick it up no matter what. You can’t imagine how excited I was to learn that she was writing a sports romance, and a hockey one at that! Mister Hockey was a fast read, and it was every bit entertaining. I love that I can always count on the author to deliver an enjoyable romance. I really liked that the heroine was a librarian here. I know there’s quite a few librarian romances out there, but I haven’t entirely ventured into them. Breezy was a great girl, a bit awkward, but she was very easy to relate to, what with her being a book nerd. She was also super passionate about hockey, which I couldn’t relate to because I hate sports in real life, but I loved how excited she got about her favorite team, and her favorite player, Jed. So imagine how thrilled she was when her sister brings Jed to her library to do a reading. There was a lot of internal flailing for sure! I have to say, Jed was completely unlike what I expected from a hockey player. Most hockey players in books I’ve come across have that cocky playboy persona going for them, […]

Our Feelings, Much Like the Book, Were All Over the Place: I Knew You Were Trouble by Lauren Layne

Our Feelings, Much Like the Book, Were All Over the Place: I Knew You Were Trouble by Lauren Layne

Nereyda: As you guys know, we’re big Lauren Layne fans here. Like any author, I love some of her books, like others and there have also been a few that sadly haven’t worked for me. This one falls in the middle category, I enjoyed it but there just a few things here and there that bothered me. I kind of felt like this book was kind of all over the place in terms of the story and my feelings reflected that. It had the enemies to lovers angle, the roommates angle, the wrong timing romance (they both had relationships in the beginning) and the .  I really liked certain parts, felt bleh about other parts and there was one certain part that I just didn’t like. If you’ve read the book and know my reading pet peeves, you probably already know what that is (unless you clicked the spoiler). Nick: Yeah, I was very excited for this one too. I mean it’s Lauren Layne, one of my favoritest authors ever. And the minute I received a copy, I dove into the story. All throughout I had this feeling of irritation towards the story, that I can’t quite pinpoint. Don’t get me wrong, there were some really fun parts to I Knew You Were Trouble, but for the most part, I […]

This Small-Town Romance Has It All (Including Pups!): It Happened On Love Street by Lia Riley

This Small-Town Romance Has It All (Including Pups!): It Happened On Love Street by Lia Riley

I’m a huge fan of Lia Riley and when she announced a new series, I may or may not have done a happy dance. There’s something about her writing and her characters that I adore, and I knew I was in for a treat from the very first page of It Happened on Love Street. It’s very much a signature Lia Riley book, and I enjoyed every moment of it. Lia Riley’s characters are always charming and endearing, and nothing is different here. Pepper has just moved to a small town in Georgia only to discover that her position has been muddled with, so somehow she finds herself walking dogs. The only problem is that she’s afraid of dogs (I may have gasped a little when she first mentioned it!). I liked Pepper a lot. She’s a sweetheart and so completely loyal to her baby sister. Her confusion about what to do with her life rang very true to me. She really finds herself in It Happened on Love Street and though it takes her some time, she finally learns how to put herself first from time to time. Her love interest, Rhett, completely swept me off my feet. He’s a vet (can you say swoony??), a gentleman and truly a very appealing hero. He also happens to wear glasses, […]

The Sexy, Flirty & Fun Rom-Com You Didn’t Know You Needed & A Fabulous Giveaway: Walk of Shame by Lauren Layne

The Sexy, Flirty & Fun Rom-Com You Didn’t Know You Needed & A Fabulous Giveaway: Walk of Shame by Lauren Layne

Nick’s Review What’s this? Another raving review for a Lauren Layne book? YES! I was hooked to the premise of Walk of Shame even before I read the book. The synopsis immediately caught my attention with the description of what looked like a grumpy hero and perky girl falling in love with a NYC setting. I mean what’s not to love about that premise? As expected, Walk of Shame was another flirty and fun rom-com from Lauren Layne. It’s a book that’s delightful from start to finish and will have you smiling, laughing and swooning – honestly, could there be a better combo? I was initially a bit worried that I’d find Georgie to be annoying, but I actually found her to be very lovable. She was a very happy-go-lucky character, and she has definitely got an effervescent personality, but never in an irritating way. She’s the kind of girl who brings sunshine to a gloomy room as cheesy as that sounds. I thought Georgie was funny, kind, loving and despite being a rich man’s daughter, very humble. Now imagine the complete opposite of that, and you’ll get her love interest, Andrew. This guy was a work-a-holic, a gym rat, and a grade-a grump, who fortunately has got a hidden sweet side to him, that he only allows his lady love […]

Snow, Sexy Times & A Sweet Romance: One Snowy Night by Jill Shalvis

Snow, Sexy Times & A Sweet Romance: One Snowy Night by Jill Shalvis

Jill Shalvis’ Heartbreaker Bay series has been full of charm and swoons. I can’t get enough of these loveable characters, which is why even though I strongly dislike novellas, I was eager to pick up One Snowy Night. This short story, while too short in my opinion, was still a lovely book that put a huge smile on my face. We met Rory and Max in the previous book and there was definitely some underlying tension between them in that one, and I knew that that same tension would be sizzling in their book. As expected, the chemistry between Rory and Max in One Snowy Night was palpable all throughout this novella. These two had some issues to work through. They knew each other as teenagers and they unknowingly caused some heartbreak to each other. So being stuck together in a truck is the perfect opportunity for them to talk it out. Despite the initial anger the two shared, there was obviously some underlying fierce attracting and need to protect each other. I thought they were so sweet together and I couldn’t wait for them to make up. I will admit that things happened a little fast for my liking. I’m being selfish, but I would have loved to have a longer story of these two. As characters, both Rory […]

How To Decide If Keepsake by Sarina Bowen Is The Book For You

How To Decide If Keepsake by Sarina Bowen Is The Book For You

Male virgin. How does that sound to you? Intriguing? Then, Keepsake is a must read! This was my number one reason for wanting to read Zach’s story because he was a virgin. Having grown up in a cult environment where sex was seen as a punishable sin, he hadn’t had the chance to explore intimacy with a woman. While there has definitely been focus on Zach’s virginity in the series, I liked that it was just who he was. He had the chance to lose it if he ever wanted, but the right opportunity hadn’t come for him, so he waited. While he was shy about it, he was certainly not ashamed. It was refreshing to read a romance novel that wasn’t about a manwhore hero who has slept with 90% of the female population. Do you like sensitive, kind-hearted heroes? You probably got this from the above, but Zach was the absolute sweetest. I loved his kindness, his compassion and his gentle attitude. It’s not often that you see those kind of heroes in romance novels. As much as I like the cocky guys in books from time to time, I mostly prefer the sweet, hardworking and loving guys and Zach epitomized everything I adore in a sweet guy. Oh and, this is a guy who is not afraid to […]

Fall In Love With Logan & Alexis In To Love And To Cherish by Lauren Layne

Fall In Love With Logan & Alexis In To Love And To Cherish by Lauren Layne

Hey everyone! We’re eager to bring to you character profiles and a buddy review for our tour stop on the To Love and to Cherish Blog Tour. As huge fans of Lauren Layne, we couldn’t wait to dive into this one, and it did not disappoint one bit. We’re sad that this is the end of the Wedding Belles, but it has been a wonderful ride for us. The Hero Logan! Nick: What can I say about this guy to get you all to try this book? British, accountant, nerdy. Is that enough to convince you to pick up To Love & To Cherish? Lauren Layne always writes amazing men in her books. I love that more often than not they are actual good guys that you can envision yourself being attracted to in real life. Logan was no different. I have been intrigued by his character since the first book and waiting for To Love and To Cherish has been pure torture, but it was all worth it. Logan has lots of great features to his personality – he’s savvy, smart and kind-hearted. But the best part about him? His patience when it comes to Alexis. I mean, this guy has been in love with Alexis for 8 years and he waited to give her the time to come […]

Novellas, Hate-To-Love & A Comparison Gone Wrong : Romance Bites

Novellas, Hate-To-Love & A Comparison Gone Wrong : Romance Bites

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne I’m kind of obsessively in love with The Hating Game. I picked it up while on vacation and I wasn’t expecting to fall so hard for these characters, but I did. The hate-to-love trope is one of my most favorite tropes in romance novels, but there’s always a chance for it to be executed poorly. Sally Thorne though, knew exactly how to write this hate-to-love romance in a fresh, funny and fiesty way! I loved every minute of reading this book from the sizzling chemistry to the excellent banter between our two weirdos, Luce and Josh. What makes this book such a delight to read are the adorably charming and relateable characters of Luce and Josh. These are two people you could probably meet on the streets one day, and it’s what added to the engaging factor of the story. The romance, while definitely with a lot of “hate” at the beginning, progressed with a glorious slow burn. It was so fun watching these two go from constantly being at each others throats in the office to realizing their depth of their feelings for each other. It was sweet and had my heart all warm and happy. If you’re looking for something to make you simultaneously laugh and swoon and obsess, The Hating Game is the […]

Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas

Lisa Kleypas is one of Nick’s favorite authors and she’s been trying to get me to read her books for months!  It’s always intimidating to read one of your friends favorite books/authors, but Nick is pretty good at knowing what I like and don’t like. Blue Devil Drink: (recipe found on Pinterest, click image for full details) I saw this on Pinterest and thought it was so fun that it matched the cover and title for this book!  I’m not much of a drinker, but I do like to have a drink on Saturday nights to unwind at the end of the day. I’m definitely more of a girly-drink kind of gal and this Blue Devil drink sounds perfect.  I’m looking forward to trying this soon, along with a good book! 4.5 from 2 reviews Save Print Blue Devil Author: Linda @With a Blast Recipe type: Drink Serves: 1   Ingredients 3 parts Gin 1 part Blue Curacao 1 part Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice 3 – 4 Ice Cubes Slice of Lemon, to garnish {optional} Instructions Place the Gin, Blue Curacao, Lemon Juice and Ice in a cocktail shaker – shake well, pour through the sieve into a serving glass. Our Ultimate Chick-Lit Checklist featuring Manhunting by Jennifer Crusie

Our Ultimate Chick-Lit Checklist featuring Manhunting by Jennifer Crusie

Chick lit books are our comfort genre, there’s nothing we love better than getting lost in a good chick lit book and we’ve been reading more of these lately.  One of our goals this year was to read at least one old chick lit book a month and last month was my (Nereyda) turn to pick the book and I went with one of my favorites.  I’ve read this at least 6 times in the last few years and we both had fun reading it together.  Since our main character, Kate, is a planner she approaches dating this way too, by making a checklist of her perfect guy.  We though it would be a fun idea to make a checklist of what we look for in Chick Lit books.  Enjoy! 🙂 All vector art courtesy of Freepik. Our Thoughts: Nick: Manhunting was my Nereyda-made-me-read-it book for January and I read during a time I was super frustrated with a lot of things going on in life. BEST.IDEA.EVER. This book was just so darn cute and made me laugh so hard a couple of times. You perhaps don’t know this about me, but I used to devour chick lit before I got into YA and I hadn’t read one in a while and Manhunting just made me fall in love with the genre all […]
