The Vivid and Colorful World of Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi (GIVEAWAY)

Although this author writes one of my most favorite series, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with Furthermore.  Not only do I not read much Middle Grade, but I wasn’t sure how a book without the chemistry and romance of the Shatter Me books would work for me. I think it’s best to completely forget all about the other series (whether you love it or hate it) and go into this with an open imagination. I will say right away that my most favorite thing about this story is the world! It always amazes how a person can come up with something so creative and imaginative and that’s exactly what we get here. The world was a mix of Wonderland and Neverland and Oz while still managing to be unique all on its own.  I felt at times like I could perfectly picture in my head some of the scenes described and I could very well see this being made into a movie (directed by Tim Burton, of course).  Even Alice and Oliver seemed to come alive. My heart broke for poor Alice and the loneliness and desperation she felt at being so different from everyone else she knows. Devoid of color in a world where color is life. Everyone could relate to Alice and their feeling of not fitting in at one point or another, no matter what stage […]

Audiobook Review: Outrun the Moon by Stacey Lee

Audiobook Review: Outrun the Moon by Stacey Lee

I’m not a huge fan of historical fiction, but Stacey Lee is an author that I have been wanting to read so I immediately added this to my TBR. I ended up going with the audio version of this book, which was a great option for someone who a) loves audiobooks and b) isn’t a huge fan of historical fiction. I had already been warned that her last book was pretty damn sad and tried my best to mentally prepare myself for this one. Still, there is something about reading about tragedy, even if it’s fiction that can still weigh on you. Luckily, the  writing transformed this book from a sad and depressing story into a sad but beautiful story. As much as I loved the writing I think I loved the characters even more, especially our MC Mercy Wong. Mercy s the kind of girl you want to know and be friends with. The kind of girl you admire for her bravery and determination to not only make something out of herself but for helping others. Although she was destined to not have much in life, her determination to not only make the best life for her but to attend the best school made it easy to love Mercy right away.  Mercy brought out the best in everyone including her new friends at school, even the ones that took […]

Waiting On Wednesday (118): Teen Assassins & Social Media Love Stories

Nereyda’s Pick   Although this reminds me a bit of Shatter Me, it still sounds pretty freaking amazing. And that cover is gorgeous yet so simple, I hope the inside is as good as the outside. Is this on your TBR yet??? I’ve been wanting to get back to doing book looks and this cover really inspired me: Nick’s Pick   This sounds like a super adorable book and I’m really digging that cute cover. It will be interesting to see how their internet fame affects their romance!  What do you think of our picks? Let us know in the comments below if you’re excited for any of these! Follow Us: Follow

Audiobook Review: The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner

Audiobook Review: The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner

I admit that I was fully sucked in by the hype for this book!  I didn’t have this on my radar that much other than a mild curiosity, until I found out that Michael Crouch would be narrating it.  I’m a huge fan and I added this book and the audiobook to my TBR.  I ended up getting an audiobook copy for review which I was very excited about because it has three narrators, one for each POV.  This book and I got off to a rocky start.  The religion stuff threw me off a bit (I grew up in a normal Christian household so it’s not that religion makes me uncomfortable) and it took me a while to get used to the weirdness of it (the snake stuff).  In fact, it wasn’t until the halfway point where I felt like I got sucked in the story and even then, I had a weird relationship with this book. I loved some parts and other parts not so much… Cover Inspired Look: (click for more details) This is probably one of my most… out-there looks that I’ve done, but I like it!  I remember this book cover catching my eye last year and thinking it would make a great dress.  Since Lydia was so into fashion, I thought it would be fun to create a book look for it.  I could have chosen […]

Audiobook Review: Reign of Shadows by Sophie Jordan

I had been really excited for this book when I first heard about it last year.  I mean, just look at that cover and summary?  How could I not be intrigued?  Somewhere in the last few months, I took a much-needed break from YA books.  After hearing Nick tell me how she liked this book, it had me itching to read this once again.  I pounced at the chance to listen to the audiobook for this one and I’m so glad I did! Cover Inspired Look: (click for more details) This was one of the book covers that inspired me to start doing book looks again.  I was actually motivated by this awesome and colorful Urban Decay Vice eye shadow palette and wanted to put a look together. It took me a while to get this look how I wanted and it wasn’t until I found this dress a few weeks ago that I finally finished this.  I love this look and would totally love to wear this…if I had somewhere to wear it to. I’m sure people would look at me weird if I wore this to Target (which lets be real, that’s where I spend most of my time). My Thoughts: I think my YA break really did the trick because I’ve been in the mood to read all these YA books lately, I think I really missed […]

Review: Starflight by Melissa Landers

Review: Starflight by Melissa Landers

Up until recently I was convinced that science fiction books weren’t for me. Then came the masterpieces that were The Lunar Chronicles, The Starbound Trilogy and The Illuminae Files and my entire outlook on the genre changed. So naturally, when I read the summary of Starflight, I knew it was a book I was going to read. Starflight turned out to be an addicting space opera and I devoured every word of it. What I loved about Starflight was how Melissa Landers was able to give equal importance to the plot and the characters. One of my reasons for not loving science fiction books is, very often, I feel like the characters are underdeveloped. Here, this wasn’t the case at all because all the characters were very well-crafted. Our protagonist, Solara, was my favorite character of the book. A poor criminal who grew up with many mechanical skills, she was very rough around the edges, intelligent, badass and a heroine I found very easy to root for. She wasn’t just all tough though. I also loved that she had a more emotional side to her personality, and truly when you find out what led to her becoming a criminal, it will be difficult for your heart not to shatter to a million pieces. Despite her sucky past though, she remained a character who was confident in her abilities and worked […]

5 Reasons You Should Read Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay

5 Reasons You Should Read Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay

I’ve had this book on my TBR for years!  When it was selected as our January Book Club pick of the week, I was excited to finally get to this.  Today, I have a cover inspired look and my top 5 reasons you should read Of Beast and Beauty. Cover Inspired Look: (click for more details) Of course, the main thing that catches my eye is the rose and I wanted to focus on that for my look.  I found this gorgeous dress with rose details.  Since the dress is pretty busy, I wanted to keep the rest of the look simple.  Some black heels, a red clutch and some earrings and ring complete the look. 5 Reasons to Read Of Beast and Beauty:  1.  Fairytale Retelling Done Right I read Princess of Thorns last year so I already knew that Stacey Jay is one hell of an author.  She’s so great at taking these classic and timeless fairy tales we love, and not just giving us a great story but adding her own unique twist to it.  Beauty and the Beast is such a favorite fairy tale of mine (who doesn’t want Belle’s library?) so I was looking forward to see how the author would tackle this story.  I wasn’t disappointed and I loved that while we still are able to draw parallels to the classic story, there are […]

Project DIY Halloween Costume Kick-Off!

Project DIY Halloween Costume Kick-Off!

I have a weird relationship with Halloween.  On one hand, I’ve only dressed up twice in my life, once in 2nd grade and another time about 3 years ago.  On the other hand, I really love seeing my kids and my nieces and nephews dressed up and seeing how creative some people can come up with their costume idea.  But then again, seeing costumes like ‘sexy Donald Trump’ or ‘sexy Chucky’ make my poor brain hurt… The one time I dressed up as an adult (I was a Mad Hatter), my costume ended up costing about $70.  Yikes!  I don’t mind splurging on good clothes once in a while, but blowing that kind of money on a cheap polyester outfit that I used once and has been hanging at the back of my closet made me not want to buy a store costume again. Last year, I put together a few DIY grown up friendly Halloween costumes that are budget friendly.  The best part is that most pieces can be found in your closet (or a thrift store) and you can wear most of the pieces again.  I’ve already started to put together some outfits for some more Halloween DIY costumes to feature this month.  I’m looking for ideas and/or requests from you guys from movies, tv shows, books, etc.  So if you have an idea for a costume idea […]

Waiting On Wednesday (153)

*** This sounds so different and dark.  One guy caught between two girls??? Finally!  I’m really curious to see how this will all play out.  The fact that it has that ‘is it, or isn’t?’ paranormal feel of Mara Dyer just makes me want to read it more. What are you waiting for this week? Book Look: Click image for buy links I posted this on my other blog earlier this week, but since this is my WOW pick I thought I would share on here too.  I don’t post Book Looks on this blog anymore so if you liked seeing them, make sure to follow my other blog. 🙂 This author has some of the coolest book covers, I love how dark themed they are.  This cover was just revealed last week ans as soon as I saw this I thought the cover would make a cute print for a dress or skirt.  Since that doesn’t exist, I went on the hunt to find a look inspired by this cover. The first thing that stands out is all the colors and leaves that pop out against the black.  I found this black dress with leafs of different colors all over it and thought it would be perfect.  The green belt was kind of like a sign that it was meant to be.  There is so much going on in […]

Review: Made You Up by Francesca Zappia

Review: Made You Up by Francesca Zappia

I have very conflicted feelings about Made You Up.  I loved most of it, the writing was beautiful and the characters and the story were so unique.  But one particular plot of the book and the really long length made this book drag out for me, which unfortunately took away some of my enjoyment from the book.  For anyone else who doesn’t mind reading longer books, this probably wouldn’t be an issue with most of you.  But for someone like me, who reads slow and hates books longer than 370 pages, this book seemed eternal sometimes. Alex has schizophrenia and has a hard time telling the difference between what is real and what is fake.  The snake that she always sees at school that nobody else seems to freak out over? Probably fake.  The Nazis who are out to get her?  Yeah, probably fake too.  The little boy who helped her free the lobsters years ago?  Maybe fake???  As a result, Alex carries around a camera with her everywhere and takes pictures of everything, so she could figure out later when she’s looking through her pictures what was real or not.  She’s never forgotten about that little boy though and doesn’t know if she could trust her memory or imagination when she meets Miles, who she swears is the same little boy.  Having to start out in a new school because of […]

Audiobook Review: Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley

I know this book was a little bit too weird for some people, but I was odly fascinated by it.  What made this even better for me was how amazing the audio performance was for this one.  This kind of book is not my usual read, and I was a little bit scared off by the reviews at first.  But once I found out that Michael Crouch was narrating this one, I knew I had to listen to it!  Listening to the book felt a bit like hearing a movie and I ended up breezing through this one in a few hours. Magonia was such a unique story, and I’m not exactly sure what it is yet.  It felt a bit like sci-fi and a bit of everything else.  Aza has always struggled just to even breathe on Earth.  With a mysterious lung disease that makes it hard to breath and speak, she’s always felt like she doesn’t belong.  Even if her family and her best friend Jason do everything to make her feel like she does.  Jason, who has feelings for Aza (it’s mutual), is the only one who believes Aza when she tells him about the ships she sees in the skies.  But right as they both decide to finally make their move, Aza is taken to Magonia where she is told is where she belongs.  Everyone believes Aza […]

Audiobook Review & Book Look (87): Daughter of Deep Silence by Carrie Ryan!

This is the first book I’ve read by Carrie Ryan.  I’ve had her books on my TBR for years, but I’m such a scaredy cat that I just haven’t gotten around to reading them yet.  When I first saw this, after I got over that gorgeous cover, I immediately added this to my ‘I need it now’ list.  I am such a sucker for anything having to do with revenge, and this summary feels like it was made for me.  I’m just gonna go ahead and pretend that it was… This summary really doesn’t do the book justice at all.  It’s very vague, which can be a good thing I guess because you have no idea what to expect.  After the ship Frances and her family, along with hundreds of other passengers, was hijacked, Frances and her friend that she met onboard Libby (who has a strong resemblance to Frances) are one of the few that managed to escape.  Unfortunately, it takes a few days for them to be rescued at sea and at that point Libby had already passed away.  When she learns that there are two other survivors from the ship, Grey (the boy she met and had a romance with on the ship) and his father, she feels a little bit of relief that she isn’t the only survivor.  Until Grey and his dad tell the press […]

Book Looks (86): Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman!

*** I saw this gorgeous cover a few months ago, but didn’t actually read the summary until a few days ago.  How awesome does this sound?  A stand-alone YA Western?  The summary had me at the word ‘gang.’  I’ve had this ring on my Polyvore drafts for months and was excited to finally find a book I would use it with.  With a simple sunflower dress and skull necklace, your ‘Vengeance’ look is complete! Where I See Fashion (19): Between the Notes by Sharon Huss Roat!

*** I don’t blame you if you don’t see what I see when it comes to this one, it’s pretty vague.  But I still liked it.  I saw this dress on Polyvore a few weeks ago, and it reminded me of a book cover, but I wasn’t sure which one.  I saved it because I knew there was a cover I could use for it, and I actually had to go through my Goodreads TBR until I finally found the book it reminded me of.  For some reason, the designs on the hem of the dress, reminded me of buildings.  Which reminded me of the building on this cover, kind of. I love books like this and I’m really excited about Between the Notes.  Is this on your TBR? Book Looks (84): Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo!

*** Isn’t this cover gorgeous?  I really liked Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy and I’m looking forward to this one too.  I liked the feathery dress and added the crow ring and wing earrings that remind me of the wing on the cover.  I also wanted to add a small touch of red like the cover, so that went to the heels.  This would be so cool to wear to a book event.  A fancy book event maybe, but still.  I would at least wear the earrings. 🙂 Are you excited for this book too? Where I See Fashion (16): Don’t Ever Change by M. Beth Bloom!

*** I’m not usually a fan of cartoony looking covers, but I do love the wheel of this one, and the message of it.  There was something about this dress that caught my eye, I’m pretty sure that almost all the colors on the cover are on the dress. Where I See Fashion (15): Things We Know by Heart by Jessi Kirby!

*** This seemed like it had a Valentines feel to it with the hearts and all the red.  Of course, the book sounds so damn sad and while I normally stay away from books like thi, I’m DYING to read this one!  It sounds sooooo good!  I love how simple this cover is, with the human hearts turning into heart shapes.  But, I love the black heart which is what I focused on.  Have you read this book yet?  Is it on your TBR?
