The Weekly Recap (268): Nereyda Learns To Ride A Bike & Nick Has Book Hangover

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hi everyone! How is everyone doing? This week went by very fast for me. On Sunday the Eagles won the Superbowl, so everybody was in a celebratory mood. There were fireworks, people climbing greased-up bowls, car flipping and horse-poop eating involved for the people of Philly. I don’t get football, but was certainly happy for all the fans from the city. And also happy because I got Thursday off due to the Parade. I didn’t go to it because I don’t do crowds. So instead I stayed home and watched TV. Anyone watching the Winter Olympics? School has been so busy for me this term. I have assignments due every week and I feel like I barely got a breather since January. I think I was just spoiled with all the free time last year. Besides school, nothing very exciting happened to me. I did go get lunch at this awesome Chinese restaurant with my pal, early in the week, but that’s about it. Check out what I was up to reading wise this week: What I Read:      It was a mixed week for me for the most part. I started off pretty strongly with Starry Eyes, From Lukov With Love and Making Up being the stellar books I expected them to be. But I found both The Queen’s Rising and Wicked Attraction to be quite […]

The Book-Baby Hater & The Book-Dad Fan Fawn Over Do Over by Serena Bell

The Book-Baby Hater & The Book-Dad Fan Fawn Over Do Over by Serena Bell

Nereyda: Books with kids in them and I just… don’t get along. When Do Over showed up in my email, there was something about it that made me want to request it despite the pesky kid. The big reason this one caught my attention was because this book reminded me so much of Any Man of Mine by Rachel Gibson, which is not only one of my favorite books, but also one of the rare books with kids that I love. Nick: Unlike Nereyda, I’m not a baby hater! But I do love all things second chance romances (and hot dads), so I had to get this one. Plus, I had seen Lauren Layne rave about Serena Bell’s books in the past, and I have had her on my TBR ever since. Do Over was so much more than I expected. I went in knowing that I would probably like it, but I was very pleasantly surprised at just how much I loved it. Nereyda: Exes are a favorite trope of mine, enough that it made me overlook the kid thing. I’m so glad I did because this was such a refreshing book that I just ate up, I couldn’t stop reading it! Another selling point for me was that the kid belonged to the main characters so not only do they have an established history, they also have an established […]

The Weekly Recap (266): Nick Expresses Her Love For A Vaccuum Cleaner & Nereyda Makes An Appearance

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hi everyone! I hope you all are doing good! I had a pretty decent week, albeit an academically busy one. It’s getting into that time of the quarter when I have loads and loads of assignments, so I’m just constantly busy. We’ve been having some dreary weather lately, unfortunately. We had some awful wind and rain on Tuesday. It takes my friend and I about 15 minutes to walk to class from our apartment, but it actually took us 30 minutes on Tuesday morning. Good thing, we usually leave 30 minutes before classes begin, so we arrived right on time. My roommate also got a fancy new vacuum cleaner, and guys!! I’m so in love. Nereyda says it makes me sound so weird and adultish, but omg this vacuum! It cleaned up every dusty nook and corner of my room! I was so at peace after cleaning my room! Our old vacuum was starting to act up and not work as well, so this was just great. I got some very exciting book mail this week, so let’s get to my reading updates! What I Read:      This was a wonderful reading week for me. All these books were 3.5 stars and above. I loved loved loved On Hart’s Boardwalk. It featured the future story of one of my favorite couples from the author. It was a […]

The Weekly Recap (263): First Recap of 2018

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hi everyone! Long time no see! This is our first recap of the year, and I can’t believe it’s 2018 already! I hope everyone had a good holiday season with their family and friends. I sure did! I went to Colorado to visit friends, and it was very fun. It was nice and relaxing to be out of Philadelphia. Then I came back to freezing temperatures here! I know I was complaining about how warm it is last year, but this is too cold! I had to run some errands this week before school starts on Monday, and nearly froze my fingers off! This was my last full week of winter break. I head back to school on Monday. I didn’t do much other than go to Barnes & Noble on Tuesday to get a planner and some books because I got a gift card. I spent a few hours investigating the book shelves and came back home with two new books. I also went to see The Greatest Showman at the cinema. It was a lot of fun. I loved the songs in the movie, but there were some minor issues with the pacing of the movie and I thought there were some holes in the story. Still, I had fun watching it! Other than that, I was home, doing some chores here and there, cooking […]

The Cream of the Crop of 2017

The Cream of the Crop of 2017

Hi readers! As our last post of the year, we’re here today to share our favorite books of 2017. We’ve read some pretty fantastic books and as always narrowing it down was tough, but we’ve managed! Nick’s Favorite YA         Nick’s Favorite Romance Nereyda’s Favorites: Picking my favorite books is the year is always so hard because I usually have so many favorites. This year, it’s hard picking my favorites for an entirely different reason. As most of you know, I’ve been in a horrible book slump most of the year. I’m just barely out of it, luckily, but I didn’t read many books this year, I mostly listened to audiobooks and even then most of the books I read and listened to were re-reads. In fact, as of right now, out of the 97 books I have read this year, only 15 of them weren’t audiobooks.  3 of those 15 were re-reads at the beginning of the year and 6 of those I read in the past month… so between January and November I only read 6 books. That was a really bad book slump!  Anyway, here are my favorites of the year, I did end up reading a lot of books I liked and loved but these are the ones that really stood out for me:       *** Did any of these books make the cut for your […]

A Celebrity Romance Done Well & An Author Who Does Not Use Her Full Potential

A Celebrity Romance Done Well & An Author Who Does Not Use Her Full Potential

Acting on Impulse by Mia Sosa I feel like a terrible blogger because I read Acting on Impulse at the end of my summer break, but never reviewed it. I was writing a list of book recs for Nereyda when I realized it! Oof! Acting on Impulse was such a fabulous book! It had everything that I enjoy in a good romance – it was honestly a pure joy to read this book, and I’ll certainly be re-reading it when I’m in a book funk. I’m not usually one for celebrity romances, because I feel like a lot of the drama in the book comes from the celebrity status, but I still couldn’t wait to try this one because of that adorable cover. As I said, I adored every moment of this book. It had some fabulous characters, a swoony romance, and a very fun writing style from Mia Sosa. Tori, the heroine, was a breath of fresh air! She’s sassy, confident, but also has her vulnerabilities. She is absolutely a character with a giant heart, and I loved how kind and humble she was. As much as I loved Tori, for me it was Carter who stole the show. What a fantastic love interest he was! I’m such a sucker for a down-to-earth, genuine beta male in romance books – they are WAY WAY WAY more swoony than alpha males. […]

The Weekly Recap (262): The Last One For 2017

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hello friends! I’m so excited to be finally done with school. I had my finals this past week. They were stressful as expected, but I’m glad that they are all over. I’m glad that I don’t have to pick up another textbook for about 3 weeks. Right after my last presentation, I went to get some shopping done at King of Prussia with two of my friends. I needed to buy some Christmas presents for some of my friends and I also needed to get a dress for myself as I was invited to a Christmas party at some fancy restaurant. I was able to find gifts for my friends fairly easily – there were some really good deals the day I went – but omg, finding a dress was such a process. I don’t wear dresses, because I hate the way my legs look. I have these big chunky calves and ugly ass knees, so I choose not to display them. I tried on maybe 10 or so dresses until I found one that I liked. I’m still going to wear tights with them because I’m not imposing my ugly legs to others around me haha! I don’t really have big plans for the break besides going to Denver. I’m hoping to just relax and take it easy and hopefully get some reading done! This will […]

The Weekly Recap (261): Nick Meets A Blogging Friend & Nereyda Is Cold

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hi friends! How are you all doing? I’ve missed everybody! My break was good. I really needed to be off-line for a bit so I could focus on myself and school, and that’s exactly what I did. My Thanksgiving break was good. I didn’t do anything on Thanksgiving itself, but I went up to NYC on the Saturday and met up with Ari at The New Romantics. We had fun walking all over NYC. The weather was nice that day too, so the whole day was pleasant! It was fun to meet another good blogging friend. Now, we have our first snowfall here in Philly. I guess we can finally say with certainty that winter is officially here, which I’m glad about – I was getting annoyed with the never ending warmth. This coming week is my last week of school. I’m excited for my three-weeks winter break. I’m going to visit my friends back in Denver, who I haven’t seen for a while now, so I’m pretty excited about that. But mostly, I’m looking forward to relaxing a bit more, since school has been a stressful mess this quarter. I did get a lot of reading done over the past few weeks, and some of them were really great, so let’s check them out! What I Read:               I won’t talk all these books because this […]

The Weekly Recap (259): Nick Needs A Break & Nereyda Is Reading More Than Ever!

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hi! How are you all doing? I’ve been a little down this week for a variety of stress-related reasons, school, work, blog, life! I’ve decided to take a mini-break from the blog for the sake of my well-being. I haven’t been reading as much either, which makes me sad, but normally I would read at night before bed, but lately, the minute I get on my bed, I’m asleep within 5 minutes. I think I just need a good long break. I didn’t do much of anything this week. Just went to school, to work, and you know, the same old. This week I’m only going to school until Tuesday, since we’re getting Thanksgiving break. I’ll be happy for that break so I can actually catch up to school work and maybe reading! I’m planning on doing some online black friday shopping too? How about you guys? Any exciting plans for Thanksgiving, US folks? Anyways, I’m hoping to be back around the first week of December. I hope you guys have a lovely Thanksgiving if you’re celebrating! Take care everyone! Let’s get to my reading updates now: What I Read:      I truly enjoyed reading all of these books. Kulti was really good, but it needed to be heavily edited. There were scenes that felt very much pointless to me. I still enjoyed the romance a lot […]

The Weekly Recap (258): Nick Is Cold & Nereyda Chops Off Her Hair (& Loses Shit, But What’s New?)

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hi! How’s everyone doing? I’m well, but super cold. The temperatures suddenly dropped from about 70 on Monday to 35 on Tuesday, and my body is not adjusting to the cold as I would like. I’m constantly cold and bleary and ugh all I want to do is sleep. These past two weeks were absolute hell for me. I had 3 exams, and they were all for pretty tough courses, so I was buried in my school books for the most part. I am hoping that my exams went okay though I’ll admit to not feeling extra great after them. I’m finally done though until early December, so yay! After my exams ended, I went to T-Swirl Crepe in Chinatown. It’s this Japanese creperie that has AMAZING crepes. My friend and I needed a pick-me-up after the two weeks we had, so we we decided to go there. And it was just what I needed that day! I as always took crappy pictures of my crepe, so I won’t share it, but check them out on Instagram! I had a banana chocolate one that had chocolate custard, whipped yoghurt, bananas, chocolate sauce and the most amazing chocolate truffles. It was as delicious as it sounds. Besides eating (LOL), I also went to see Thor Ragnarok. It was hilarious and so much fun. I just wish I weren’t […]

Didn’t know that was a thing.” “Totally is.” He pressed his thumbs together with the grass between them, then lifted his hands to his mouth and blew. The sound that came out made Emma laugh out loud. “That sounds like a dying bird.” “Does not.” He blew again, and it was even worse. “I have it on good authority that it actually sounds like a hippopotamus’s mating call.” She laughed again as she sat up. “Who in your circle of weirdos even knows what a hippo’s mating call sound like?” “Not important.” “Well, if I hear hooves coming our way, I’m getting on Honeydrop there and leaving you at the hippos’ mercy. Just saying.” “Here.” He picked her a blade of grass. “You try it.” “I have no desire to call in a herd of hippos, thanks.” “They’re not native. No worries. Worst thing you’ll do is tick off the resident […]

The Weekly Recap (255): Nick Sticks With A Goal & Nereyda Needs A New Name

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hello friends! How’s everyone doing? I had a shorter week this week since we had Monday off, but I was still pretty exhausted by the end of it. I came back home on Thursday and napped for like 3 hours … and then went back to bed a few hours later and slept more! We finally got some cooler weather down here, which has been so nice. It’s supposed to be hot again over the weekend, so ugh, but hopefully, fall is finally here. On Wednesday we had a quarterly event at school where they bring in someone working in our field to talk, and have lunch. We had an interesting man from a big pharma come in and give us a talk. It was good to hear about all the types of jobs that there are within the field, but he also mentioned how this other major is starting to steal jobs meant for people with a degree in statistics. So that was depressing. Overall though it was good. My friend and I were off to another food adventure on Thursday. We went to this teeny tiny little Middle Eastern grill that had delicious food. I tried a lamb kabob sandwich that was honestly to die for! Even their french fries were out of the world! I ended the week with a ton of homework and […]

The Weekly Recap (254): The Slump That Won’t Go Away

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hello friends! How are you all doing? This was week 2 of school for me and I think I’m finally getting used to being back at school. The work load is pretty intense though, and sometimes all I want to do is procrastinate. But there’s no time for that! I had an incident again this week with my damn closet collapsing for the second time this year. I was so annoyed because I had just cleared it up and organized everything last weekend. My landlord decided to charge me $50 to repair the thing. Literally all he had to do was tighten the screws in the bars again, but he still wanted $50 … I was kind of annoyed because I’m on a budget and all. It’s repaired though now. Anyways, I ended up going to Reading Terminal Market for ice cream with some friends on Thursday, because I was a little down at the end of the week. I had a pomegranate ice cream with blueberry swirls and chocolate chunks in it and it was exactly what I needed! We also ended up walking around the market and I stocked up on some produce. I love going to this market, but I don’t get the chance to go very often. It’s indoors and has a ton of fresh local vendors as well as food stands primarily […]

The Weekly Recap (253): Back To School Blues

The Weekly Recap (253): Back To School Blues

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hey everyone! Well I’m back in Philly and I’m already over it! It’s been a really busy week since I left home. Getting back into the groove of school is taking longer than I would like. Everyone was really sad when I left home, and to be honest, I’m still a little homesick. Hopefully, when the school work begins to pile up, I’ll be able to get over it. Flying went okay for me this time around. I honestly thought immigration and customs on entry to the US would be a pain, but it surprisingly went smoothly for me. I even got through the whole thing in less than an hour, when normally I would wait 1 to 2 hours in line. I was also able to get over my jet-lag pretty quickly. School was off to a good start. I think I’m going to enjoy most of my courses this quarter. It does seem like the work load is pretty hefty, but I’m hoping I will be able to manage everything with some planning and organization. The one thing I absolutely can’t stand over here though is the scorching heat. It the end of September/early October! It should be way cooler by now. It’s a really gross kind of heat too because the minute you step out you begin sweating. I think that’s why I felt […]

The Weekly Recap (252): Changes On The Horizon

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hi guys! Notice anything different?? I hope you guys like our new design as much as I do! Thanks to Aentee for designing something fun for us. 🙂 I’m still working out some kinks to the template, so please bear with us while I finish everything up. On to sadder news, I leave home on Thursday to go back to school. I’m super bummed that my 3 months vacation is over, but I guess it had to come to an end. I’m going to miss my folks a ton. 🙁 So, this will be my last post for about a week and a half. I’ll have posts scheduled for when I’m gone, but I won’t be able to visit you guys as I’ll need some time to get restettled and re-adjusted to US time zones. Most of this week was spent with my parents. My mom has been making all of my favorite foods and I’m pretty sure I’ve gained about 10 lbs this week alone. I’m still in a weird funk with my reading. I’ve been craving more and more mystery novels, and have been able to find some good stuff. Let me know if you guys have any recommendations that I should check out. What I Read:         These were all pretty great! I enjoyed most of them. Unfortunately, There’s Someone Inside Your House was […]

The Weekly Recap (251): Bleeding Gums & Bug Bites

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hi guys! How are you all doing? This week went by fast for me. I don’t remember doing much of anything, which is both a good thing and a bad thing, in my opinion. I did have a dental appointment on Wednesday. I’m not scared of the dentist or anything, but it’s not something that I look forward to going to. I have a sensitive gum conditions that causes me to bleed a lot. So while the dentist was drilling through plaque in my teeth, there was a bloodbath in my mouth – gross! He did give me a gel to apply, so hopefully that will slow down the bleeding. I also got some shopping done since I leave the Thursday after. I bought some new shirts and blouses, and of course, stocked up on my favorite non-perishable food stuff. Usually, I’ll bring like one full baggage worth of spices and such, but this time around I’m not bringing any spices because there’s an international grocery store right down the street from my place in Philly. That’s it for me this week, let’s go on to my book updates for the week: What I Read:       Putting this week’s read list together, I’m actually surprised I got 6 books read because I spent most of the week not reading. I’m not sure what happened here. Maybe I read […]

When An Unnecessary Twist Nearly Ruins A Good Book: What To Say Next by Julie Buxbaum

When An Unnecessary Twist Nearly Ruins A Good Book: What To Say Next by Julie Buxbaum

Nereyda: I had no intention of reading this book. I haven’t been too impressed with contemporary YA as of late, this author’s last book was a little bit of a letdown (considering all the rave reviews) and this audiobook was narrated by one of my least favorite male narrators. All signs pointed to a no for me… but my brain sometimes (aka almost always) forgets things like this and before I remembered about all the reasons why I didn’t want to read this book, I had already downloaded the audiobook. I don’t like to not review audiobooks I receive for review (unfortunately I don’t have the same mentality when it comes to eARC’s…sigh) so I figured I would give it a try. When I say Nick talking about how much it surprised her in a weekly recap, I moved it up my list. Surprise, surprise, I actually ended up liking this quite a bit… up until the point that I didn’t… but it still wasn’t enough to make me dislike the entire book. Nick: Yeah I’m not sure what exactly prompted me to pick up the book either, but I saw it available in my library’s Overdrive, and decided to give it a shot. I definitely enjoyed What to Say Next more than I liked the author’s YA debut last year. The characters and romance were really well-written here, but […]

The Weekly Recap (249): Nick Is Sad While Poor Nereyda Is In Clarinet Hell

Nick’s Weekly Recap: Hi guys! How are you all doing? I’ve been a bit down lately. I don’t know what it is but I’ve been freaked out and panicked this whole week. I think it’s finally dawning on me that I’m about to enter my final year of school, and I guess with everything else going on, I’m just really nervous about life in general. I’m not ready to be an adult, and I desperately want to have a stable job around this time next year. So there’s a lot of internal freaking out going on inside my head. I’m also sad because I’m going to go back to Philly soon, and I’m going to miss my parents. I mean there’s Skype and everything, but it’s not the same. And my parents aren’t rich enough to buy flight tickets regularly to come see me. Maybe if I were still in Colorado I would be happier to go back, but though I love my school and program, Philadelphia is not for me. On the plus side though, one of my friends (the one who I go on food adventures with) who is in all my classes is moving into the apartment next door to mine when I go back, so I’ll have someone close by! Anyways, I know you all are eager to know if my mom’s friend’s baby has a […]
