When the life you wanted has crumbled beneath your fingers, there’s nothing left to do but pick up the pieces and soldier on. You’ve done this before.

But what happens when you no longer feel like yourself anymore? When fires spontaneously start-up around you, when you hear growling coming from underneath your bed, and you no longer recognize your face in the mirror. What happens then?

Ghost-hunter Perry Palomino doesn’t have much time to find out. Now, the evil she used to hunt is a lot closer to home. It’s inside of her, taking over her life bit-by-terrifying bit, and there’s only one person who can help her.

If part of her doesn’t kill him first.

After the shocking ending of Lying Season, I immediately started reading the next book.  I was warned that this book would take a dark turn.  I wasn’t sure what to expect since we’re already dealing with a scary ass series in general.  But once I started reading this, I totally understood the warning.  In this book we get to see a very different Perry.  While her attitude and smart ass-y ways are what made me love her in the previous books, I totally felt for poor Perry.  Among all the other bullshit life seems to throw her way, she is still being haunted by these ghosts.  This time, things are brought to a whole other level of scary!  I mentioned in my review of Lying Season that I might have been getting used to all the scary situations but oh boy was I wrong!  That scene with the crawling spiders in the bathtub have cleanse me of any desire to ever take a bath!  I’m starting to think Karina Halle has something against bathrooms in general because that’s where it seems the scariest things happen in her books.  Thanks a lot!  As if I’m not already scared enough to go pee in the middle of the night!

I felt so bad for Perry in this book but also so damn proud!  It could be so easy for anyone else to give in or fall apart, but even at the worst of times, Perry tried her best to keep it together and move on.  My one complaint with this book is that it left me with the ‘New Moon’ feeling.  You know, the one where you’re reading and reading and wondering the whole time, ‘where the fuck is Edward???’ and ‘go away Jacob!’  I missed Dex!  I wanted more of him and while I got why he wasn’t in this book so much, I’ve been spoiled by all the Dex and Perry chemistry from the previous books and I wanted more of it in this book.  Not to worry because when Dex finally does make his appearance, he is back in full Dex glory.  I did love that we seem to get a little bit more of Ada with this book because I love her character!  She is also one of my favorite parts of these books.  I just love how she isn’t afraid to tell it like it is and I love her fierce protectiveness for Perry, which seemed to intensify in this book.  I’m also intrigued by the fact that Ada can now also see some of Perry’s ‘friends’ and this makes me so excited to see what Karina has in store for us in her upcoming spin-off series.

While this book didn’t compare to how much I loved Lying Season, this was another fantastic addition to the series!  I’m definitely keeping up with this series until I catch up and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Dex, Perry and Ada.  Because that ending?  Holy shit, that was a good ending!

Some of my favorite non-spoiler quotes from On Demon Wings:

“Maybe you’re sleepwalking. And sleeptexting. And sleepprimping.”
“What’s next?” I grumbled to myself. Things were getting more out of control by the minute.
“I don’t know,” she said, straightening up and tucking her phone into the waistband of her leggings. “Just don’t start sleepfucking.”

Did I look like crap because I felt like crap, or did I feel like crap because I looked like crap? Ah, the mysteries of life.

“She’s waking up. Get the bat.”
Not exactly the best words to wake up to.

“Perry,” he said quietly, his fingers trailing down the side of my face, “you’ll never have to save my life. You gave me life. I never lived a single day until the first day I met you.”

  1. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh…I do love me some Karina Halle!!! But sadly enough I have yet to read this series and I think I’ve been resistant because it’s scary but maybe I will take a leap of faith! 🙂 Great review!
