Amateur ghost-hunter Perry Palomino has battled ghosts, fought off skinwalkers and skirted the fine line between life and death. But can she survive bunking down in Seattle for a week with her partner (and man she secretly loves) Dex and his perfect girlfriend, Jennifer? And can she do so while being tormented by a malicious spirit from Dex's increasingly shady past? With love and life in the balance, Perry must discover the truth among the lies or risk losing everything she's ever cared about.

I started this series last year at the urging of Megan and really liked it!  Although I really enjoyed Dex and Perry’s oh-so-slow buildup, my TBR caught up with me and I ended up having to take a break after the 3rd book in the series.  Even before I read this, I was always warned about book 4.  Which made me extremely nervous/excited.  And oh boy we’re they all right!

Dex and Perry have already survived so much scary shit, but staying with Dex and his girlfriend in their apartment for a few days might be the worst thing Perry has had to go through.  I’ve certainly read enough of about Dex’s girlfriend, Jennifer (aka Wine Babe or Wine Bitch as I like to call her) but this is the first time that we (and Perry) get to actually meet her.  I was hoping that she was as big of a bitch that I had made her out to be in my head.  At first, I was a little bit disappointed because Jennifer seemed…normal.  Not at all the total bitch I was expecting, and I felt a little bit let down.  Luckily, Jennifer slowly but surely lets out the bitch in her.  While one side of me was mentally screaming ‘finally!’ the other part of me made me want to strangle Dex.  How could he be with this bitch still when he so obviously has feelings for Perry????

Okay, I got a little bit ahead of myself there.  Like always, this wouldn’t be a true EIT book without plenty of scary shit happening.  Ghosts, haunted places, and Creepy Clown Lady!  Compared to Dead Sky Morning, which probably scarred me for life (rabid raccoons and haunted babies with peeling skin and eyeballs…shudders!) this didn’t scare me as much this time around.  Maybe because I’m getting a little bit used to how scary these are…or it could be that I refuse to read these books after the sun goes down…Don’t get me wrong, this book is still scary as fuck!  Haunted insane asylums and bleeding, rotting ghosts!  I’m a huge chicken and tend to stay away from books like this, but I can read through almost anything for a good love story and Dex and Perry’s relationship overrides and the scary stuff for me.

This is such a pivotal book for the series.  A game changer!  We finally get to learn more about Dex’s past in this book and it made me understand a little bit more of why he is the way he is, and why he’s still with that bitch Jennifer.  This book is filled with so much sexual tension and chemistry, I was dying for something to come out of it, finally.  The ending of this book was O.M.G.  Soooooo, soooo good!  But then we got to the real end of this book and I was like ‘that did NOT just fucking happen!’  Needless to say, I started the next book right away.  I love these characters because they are so flawed and realistic.  They each do their own fair share of stupid things, things that have you wanting to shake some sense into them.  At the same time, you can’t help but root for them while waiting for them to get their shit together.  This book is so far my favorite of the series.  It has the perfect mix of emotional, scary, angtsy and sexy.  I’m excited to continue with the series and finally catch up!

Some of my favorite non-spoiler quotes from Lying Season:

“You’re the light in all this madness. You’re my light. I should have been with you…” The thought hit him as his face crumpled in amazement. “Oh God, why am I not with you?”
“Because you’re an idiot,” I said.

“I want you to stay with me,” he said. “And that’s the problem. Every time you leave me, I need you a little bit more.”

‘What are you saying?’ I asked softly.
‘I’m saying that you’re like my best friend,’ he said. ‘You are my best friend, and I could never let pills take away what makes you, you. Your heart. And your beautiful soul.’

“And you and Dex?”
“What about us?” …
“What’s the deal with you?”
“There is no deal. We’re just partners.”
“Are you sure? Because we all have bets on whether you guys are banging each other or not.”

  1. Wow, I’ve honestly never heard of this series before. And the fact that you’re giving 5 stars to the fourth book in a series really speaks volumes. Totally creepy cover, definitely looks like something I would see you reading. lol Great review! 🙂

  2. I feel like Karina Halle has been a really hot author in the blogosphere right now and I still need to read one of her books! This one sounds sooo creepy, though, and I like the sound of all the different paranormal/supernatural aspects included. Fantastic review, Nereyda! <33
